A recent Boulder Economic Council (BEC) meeting focused on Boulder’s research economy and the impact of Federally funded research labs. The meeting was hosted by UCAR (the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research), whose leadership briefed BEC investors on the latest developments in weather and climate research being conducted by UCAR and its affiliate, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). UCAR’s briefing is accessible by clicking here. Presentations were also made by two local companies, Global Weather Corporation and Xcel Energy, who have successfully applied UCAR/NCAR research in commercial use. The Global Weather Corporate and Xcel Energy presentation is accessible here. The meeting concluded with an overview of CO-LABS, a statewide consortium of federally funded scientific laboratories, universities, businesses and leaders. The CO-LABS overview is accessible here. CO-LABS produces a bi-annual study of the “Economic and Fiscal Impacts of Federally Funded Research Facilities in Colorado.” The latest study will be released early in 2017; the study will posted on the CO-LABS and BEC websites.
