A Cultural Powerhouse

Boulder is a nationally recognized creative hub, with one of the highest concentrations of professional artists in the U.S. Our thriving arts scene fuels economic growth, enriches community life, and strengthens our social fabric.

The arts aren’t just about inspiration—they’re a major economic driver that helps businesses thrive.

Boulder's Creative Economy by the Numbers

  • $115M – Total economic impact from cultural nonprofits in 2023
  • 2,451 jobs – Full-time positions supported by the arts sector
  • 1.9M out-of-town and local arts attendees – Generating $62M in spending at local restaurants, retailers, and hotels, which contributes $4.6M in local tax revenue
  • A vibrant cultural scene – Attracting top talent and fostering an innovative workforce

Boulder’s creative economy ranks among the strongest in the nation, with nearly 9% of residents working in creative fields —well above the national average. National studies consistently place Boulder among the top 10 communities for arts vibrancy and creative vitality -- Creative West, list of 30 Most Creative Small Cities.

Sundance Film Festival

The arrival of Sundance in 2027 will bring major economic and cultural benefits, following its $138M impact in Utah in 2024. Festival organizers describe Boulder as “an art town, tech town, mountain town, and college town—a perfect place for growth and inspiration.” This move solidifies Boulder’s role as a national leader in arts and innovation.

The Arts: Strengthening Our Community

The arts don’t just inspire—they transform lives, strengthen communities, and fuel economic prosperity. Studies show that a thriving arts and culture sector leads to:

  • Better health and well-being – Reducing stress and improving mental health
  • Higher student success – Increasing educational attainment and child welfare
  • Greater civic engagement – Strengthening community connections and social cohesion
  • Stronger cross-cultural understanding – Bridging diverse communities
  • Lower crime and poverty rates – Contributing to a safer, more equitable city

In short, the arts are at the heart of Boulder’s identity, driving innovation, economic growth, and a thriving, connected community.
