Colorado Tree Care Sector Partnership Launches Boulder Chamber Sponsored Arborist Apprenticeship Program

August 28th Tree Care Sector Partnership Meeting:

The Boulder Chamber is proud to announce it has taken on the role of convener of the Colorado Tree Care Sector Partnership. Established in 2017, the partnership meets virtually every month to bring together businesses, educators, and workforce leaders from across the state to strengthen Colorado’s tree care industry and address shared workforce challenges.

At the most recent August 28th meeting, members focused on the launch of the multi-employer Arborist Apprenticeship Program, sponsored by the Boulder Chamber and approved by the State of Colorado. Developed in response to growing demand for skilled arborists across the state, the apprenticeship program is designed to give participants both the technical knowledge and hands-on experience needed to enter into the workforce.

Arborist Apprenticeship Program Details:

Amabel Akwa-Asare, Workforce Development Consultant with the Boulder Chamber, presented on the apprenticeship program during the meeting and provided an overview of the requirements. The program spans approximately 2.5 years and combines structured on-the-job training with related classroom instruction. Apprentices will build core skills such as tree identification, safe climbing practices, rigging on the ground and aloft, pruning to industry standards, and the operation of essential equipment including chainsaws and chippers.

While each apprentice must complete a set of core competencies, the program is designed to remain flexible, allowing arborist employers across the state to tailor training to their operations while participating in the apprenticeship. As the apprenticeship sponsor, the Boulder Chamber oversees the program and assists with administrative responsibilities, including registering apprentices and maintaining records in accordance with State Apprenticeship Agency requirements, ensuring employers can focus on hands-on training and mentorship.

In addition to hands on training, apprentices have two educational tracks to choose from to complete the required related technical instruction for the apprenticeship. The Tree Care Industry Association’s (TCIA) online curriculum provides a flexible, employer-supported learning option, while Front Range Community College offers an in-person program that blends classroom instruction with TCIA coursework. Thanks to a workforce training grant, FRCC is offering discounted tuition of $750 for the 2025–26 academic year, and a tuition of $2,750 tuition planned for future cohorts. Registration for this year closes on September 15, with orientations and classes beginning in October.

Supporting the Tree Care Workforce:

By supporting this registered apprenticeship, the Boulder Chamber and the Colorado Tree Care Sector Partnership are helping businesses build a pipeline of skilled arborists while creating meaningful career opportunities for workers across Colorado.
