Successful Launch: Boulder Area Manufacturing Sector Partnership

On November 30, the Boulder Area successfully launched its newly formed manufacturing sector partnership. This partnership include industry leaders from Boulder, Broomfield, Longmont, and surrounding communities.

What is a Sector Partnership?

Sector partnerships are partnerships of business leaders, from the same industry and in a shared labor market region, who work with education, workforce development, economic development, and community organizations to address the workforce and other competitiveness needs of their industry.

Roughly 40 manufacturers and public partners attended the event — hosted by BI Incorporated — to share ideas and discuss the challenges facing the sector.

Paul Harter, co-founder of the NoCo Manufacturing Sector Partnership, addressed attendees at the start of the meeting, while John Tayer, the President and CEO of the Boulder Chamber, facilitated discussions. All sector partnerships convened by the Boulder Chamber utilize the Next Gen Model.

Manufacturers were asked to identify the challenges preventing the success of their organization. After reviewing all responses within the group, facilitators identified four strategic priorities.

These priorities will be the focal point of initial work between industry and public partners, via action teams.

  • Workforce Development
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Business Operations
  • Community Policy

Toward the end of the meeting, industry leaders were asked to select one or two strategic priorities they were most passionate about. These leaders will help to form action teams responsible for:

  • Creating measurable goals
  • Documenting success
  • Executing ‘early wins’

What are Action Teams?

Action teams are comprised of industry leaders and public partners — educators, economic developers, municipalities, workforce professionals. They meet in-between formal sector partnership meetings via conference calls or small, informal gatherings.

The partnership is currently organizing small action teams to utilize the information gathered at the launch meeting. The next formal partnership meeting will take place in late January or early February.

If you are a manufacturer or support manufacturers and would like to participate with this partnership, complete the Chamber’s Sector Partnership Interest Form or contact or convening team.
